Beim Carlos I handelt es sich um einen Brandy de Jerez aus dem Sherry-Dreieck in Andalusien. Als Grundlage des Solera Gran Reserva dienen die Trauben der Rebsorte Airen aus der Region Kastilien-La Mancha, wo deren Most erst vinifiziert und dann in Brennblasen zu aromatischen Holandas mit 60 bis 65 Prozent Alkoholgehalt destilliert wird. Daraufhin folgt eine im Schnitt acht Jahre andauernde Lagerung nach dem Solera-Verfahren in den Bodegas Osborne in El Puerto de Santa Maria im Sherry-Dreieck. Als Fässer kommen 500 Liter große Exemplare aus amerikanischer Weißeiche zum Einsatz, in denen zuvor mehrere Jahre Amontillado und Oloroso Sherrys reiften. Während der Reifung durchläuft der Brandy ein Solera-System, ein Stapel von Fässern, in dem alte und junge Chargen immer wieder vermählt werden. Zuletzt wird der Brandy mit einem Alkoholgehalt von 40 Prozent, einer Süßung von zwölf Gramm Zucker pro Liter und Farbstoff abgefüllt. In der Nase fällt der Carlos I durch eine intensive Sherrynote nach Rosinen und Pflaumen auf, die von Noten von Vanille, Karamell, Schokolade sowie Marmelade begleitet wird. Im Mund wird der Brandy sehr tief, vielschichtig und äußerst weich. Der ausgeglichene Charakter vermittelt deutliche Eindrücke von süßer Vanille, Karaemll, Schokolade und Sherry mit Trockenfrüchten wie Rosinen. Ferner entfaltet sich ein Touch Orange. Insbesondere kann auch die Fasslagerung durch eine präsente, aber feine Eichenholznote erkannt werden. Das ausgewogene, weiche Aroma von Vanille, Schokolade, Rosinen und etwas Eichenholz bleibt am Gaumen recht lang erhalten und ist sogar noch Minuten später zu schmecken.
Empfohlene Trinkweise
Um die Aromen des Carlos I in Gänze aufnehmen zu können, sollte der Brandy in reiner Form bei Zimmertemperatur genossen werden. Gekühlt oder mit Eiswürfeln würden die umfangreichen Aromen und der warme Charakter leiden. Neben klassischen co*cktails wie dem „Brandy Crusta“ und dem „Sidecar“ gibt es vereinzelte teils von Barlegende Charles Schumann kreierte co*cktails auf Basis des Brandys. Der Carlos I ist ein Brandy de Jerez der Qualitätsstufe Solera Gran Reserva, der heutzutage in den Bodegas Osborne im andalusischen El Puerto de Santa Maria entsteht. Geschmacklich überzeugt der Brandy mit einer vielschichtigen und harmonischen Aromatik, die eine angenehm ausgeprägte Sherrynote auszeichnet. Positiv hervorzuheben sind die alkoholische Milde und das wärmende Mundgefühl. In Reinform kommt der Brandy am besten zur Geltung, kann aber auch in einigen Drinks glänzen. Das Flaschendesign ist modern und recht stilvoll. Der Preis für die 0,7-l-Flasche des Carlos I beginnt bei günstigen 21 Euro – Geschenkverpackung inkludiert.

Carlos I belongs to the Osborne Group, one of the oldest and most prestigious producers of wine and spirits in Spain. Founded in 1772 by Thomas Osborne, the company has been producing, selecting, and improving a truly renowned and authentic product for more than two centuries.
It is then aged in ex-sherry casks using the unique Solera ageing method more commonly used in the sherry-making process. This has a huge impact on the flavour profile. Brandy de Jerez is often sweeter and more full-bodied compared to other brandies.
