BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS CROWNED

Four state champions were crowned last Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis in the 93rd edition of the Indiana State High School Basketball Tournament Series.

Unranked Lafayette Central Catholic came up with a third quarter rally that got it back in the game and the Knights went on to capture their third state title, holding off Southwestern (Shelbyville), 68-64, in the Class A State Championship Game.

The Knights, coached by Chad Dunwoody, finished 18-9 on the season, while seventh-ranked Southwestern finished with a 22-5 record this season. The Spartans were coached by Stacy Meyer.

Top-ranked Cass became the seventh undefeated state champion, continuing their excellent play as they defeated Forest Park 57-48 in the Class 2A state championship game. The win gave Cass High School its first state championship in school history.

Cass, coached by Hall of Famer Basil Mawbey, finished the season at 26-0, while eighth-ranked Forest Park finished a great season at 23-5 under head coach Ted Beach. Mawbey won his second state championship after leading Connersville to the 1983 state championship and became the first to coach to take three different schools to a state championship game. He led Kokomo to the runner-up finish in 1989.

Second-ranked Indianapolis Bishop Chatard came up with big games by three players on route to capturing their first boys basketball state championship over Fort Wayne Elmhurst, 78-44, in Class 3A.

Bishop Chatard, coached by Dan Archer, finished 22-2 on the season, while unranked Elmhurst, in the state finals for the first time in any sport, finished with a 22-6 record. Elmhurst was coached by Keith Edmonds.

Top-ranked Pike held off a valiant effort by DeKalb, winning the Class 4A state championship game, 65-52. Pike remained undefeated, joining seven other teams to complete that task, including Cass who won the Class 2A state championship earlier in the day.

Pike, coached by Larry Bullington, finished 29-0 on the season, while fourth-ranked DeKalb finished with a 26-2 record. The Barons were coached by Cliff Hawkins.
