With our bioassays we conduct standardised laboratory tests to determine the toxicity of a substance or mixture. For more realistic research we mimic part of an ecosystem in mesocosms (a type of marine water pond) to facilitate the research of more subtle effects.

Seaports are gateways that connect a nation to the world economy. With trade by sea increasing due to globalization, the need for the improvement and development of seaports cannot be overlooked. While the development of ports is considered essential for the economic growth and prosperity of a nation, they also result in environmental deterioration that can hurt the future of humanity. The factors that cause such deterioration are many and have been discussed and studied in some detail over the years. Of these, however, studies associated with the environmental impacts of seaports emanating from the oceanfront are limited. It is with this understanding that the current work discusses the physical and biological impacts that occur due to the oceanic environment in seaports, the existing policy provisions, and the possible ways ahead to reduce environmental deterioration and allow their sustainable operation, by means of reviewing published works.

Major oil spills occur occasionally and receive considerable public attention because of the obvious attendant environmental damage, including oil-coated shorelines and dead or moribund wildlife, especially oiled seabirds and marine mammals. Acute effects may be of short duration and limited impact, or they may have long-term population- or community-level impacts depending on the timing and duration of the spill and the numbers and types of organisms affected. Oil also enters the sea when small amounts are released over long periods, thus creating chronic exposure of organisms to oil and its component chemical species. Sources of chronic exposures include point sources, such as natural seeps, leaking pipelines, offshore production discharges, and non-point runoff from land-based facilities.
